Travel and parking Wacken Open Air 2026

Wacken starts the moment you leave home

From July 29 to August 1, 2026, the small village of Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein turns into the world's metal capital once more. Around 85,000 metalheads from more than 80 countries make the trip. Whether you're driving in from Hamburg, Cologne, or all the way from the Netherlands or Belgium, sharing the ride means sharing the cost and the fun.

Why carpool to Wacken

Wacken’s own organizers actively encourage fans to combine the free shuttle bus from Itzehoe with carpooling, to ease the pressure on the roads and parking areas around the village during the festival. Sharing a ride fits right into that. Split the fuel costs, split the Car Access Pass for the campground, and arrive in festival mode with people who you share your ride with.

At Slinger, we match festival lovers from the same region who are heading to the same event. You drive together, you split the costs, and you walk onto the festival grounds with someone you met along the way or with friends you already knew, just cheaper and more fun.

Over 30,000 Slinger-users across Europe know how much fun it is.

Getting to Wacken and parking information

Wacken lies about 80 km northwest of Hamburg. The most direct route by car is the A23, exit Itzehoe Süd or Itzehoe Mitte. How to get there:

  • The free official shuttle: Park at one of the car parks in Itzehoe and take the official W:O:A shuttle bus to the festival grounds. It’s included free with every festival ticket and runs frequently, almost around the clock during the event. The wait for the bus is also a great moment to meet your Slinger match in person for the first time.
  • Bringing your car onto the campground: If you want to camp with your vehicle on the W:O:A Campground, you’ll need a Car Access Pass (€33) or Camper Access Pass (€66). One Access Pass covers one vehicle, so it’s an easy cost to split with your carpool.
  • Daily parking or public transport: if you’re using a daily parking spot, the official shuttle, or public transport, no Access Pass is required.
  • New for 2026 is the “Last Resort Area”, which offers a campsite close to the festival grounds even for cars arriving later in the week.

For the most current details on parking, the Access Pass, and shuttle bus times, check the travel information on the official Wacken Open Air website.
